Keanu and His messiah complex

Well, I went to see constantine. I must confess, I am not much of a Keanu Reeves fan. Everytime I see his flat acting and “I don’t want to be the hero, but ok” character I wanna hurl my goobers. But, I was interested in the special effects and premise of the movie so I figured what the hell (a very appropriate response for this movie).
I won’t spoil the movie by giving away the story line, though from the trailer you can pretty much sum up the movie. I will say that if you can get beyond the theological nonsense and biblical innacuracies in this film, you might enjoy it from an “I’m bored and would like to watch a movie that has fancy effects, and not much thinking” perspective. Since I was in such a mood, it was not so bad. I would normally suggest a movie like this be watched when it comes out on DVD, but I think it’s worth the effort to watch it on the big screen since the effects are really more geared towards a large screen with great sound. If you have a 70 inch plasma screen with a kickin’ klipsh home theater package, you can skip the theater- as a matter of fact, I’ll come over to watch it with you!
One thing I have noticed about our culture and our love for flat actors like good ole Keanu- we love the anti-hero. Keanu plays the messiah/anti-hero figure very well. He’s not great looking, but better than average, he’s not a great actor, yet stars in blockbusters, he’s always the reluctant hero that eventually is given power to save the day. I guess this fits well with our post-everything context in which we hate meta-narratives and heros that are heros from all eternity.
I dunno, just some thoughts.
Enjoy the flick.
